This course focuses on the study of organisations, their management and the changing external environment in which they operate, and are designed to prepare you for a career in business and management. The units you will study combine theoretical perspectives with current industry practice to enable you to develop an understanding of the relevant knowledge and skills necessary for future employment.

Our business courses are designed to be flexible. The Business Studies and Business Administration degrees are taught in common. The first year covers the fundamental areas of business education. In the subsequent years you can work towards a specialism in one of seven areas. This course offers the opportunity for some students to study abroad during the first semester of the second year. We have links with several European universities, currently working with Paris, Madrid and Valencia. All units studied during the semester abroad are taught in English. Students wishing to study abroad need to do the preparatory unit, Language and Business Environment.

Year 1

  • Business systems an introductory managerial perspective
  • Business environment
  • Professional practice and organisational behaviour
  • Quantitative literacy
  • Fundamentals of accounting Introduction to marketing
  • Business law

Plus one of the following modules

  • Business communication
  • Business language skills
  • Language and business environment

Year 2

  • Business skills
  • Research methods for business students

Plus three pathway modules from:

  • Principles of human resource management
  • Introduction to management science
  • Introduction to financial management
  • The macroeconomic environment of business
  • Marketing management and strategy
  • Information systems in business
  • Managerial accounting
  • Plus one elective

Year 3

  • Strategic management
  • Dissertation
  • Plus two specialist modules from your chosen specialism and two electives.

The units are assessed either by 100% coursework assignments or by a combination of coursework assignment and exam. The weighting given to exams normally increase as you progress through your degree. Modules are assessed in the semester in which they are taught.

Employability and academic progression

This course will prepare you for a career in business through the development of knowledge and skills across several business disciplines such as business information systems, marketing, human resource management, and accounting and finance.

The course will enable you to develop a wide range of employability skills through a combination of coursework the emphasis on a vocational approach to teaching and extra curricula support offered by LSBU’s Employability Service.

The employment record of our business graduates is excellent. Recent graduates have gone onto roles with organisations such as PricewaterhouseCoopers, Tesco, Royal Bank of Scotland, and Surrey Police.

If you graduate from this course, you will be able to apply for further study at postgraduate level, including our full-time or part-time MSc International Business, MSc International Banking and Finance or our part-time MSc Human Resource Management.

If you gain the relevant level of experience working in business, you will also be able to consider our full-time or part-time MSc Business Project Management.

Your qualification will certainly help, but in a competitive market you also need to work on your employability, and on your career search. Our Employability Service will support you in developing your skills, finding a job, interview techniques, work experience or an internship, and will help you assess what you need to do to get the job you want at the end of your course. LSBU offers a comprehensive Employability Service, with a range of initiatives to complement your studies, including:

  • Job Shop and on-campus recruitment agencies to help your job search
  • mentoring and work shadowing schemes.

Entry requirements

  • 220 UCAS points (CCD/AB at A Level); or
  • BTEC National Diploma - MMP/DM; or
  • All Level 3 qualifications welcome - including Access courses with Pass and 21 Merits;
  • and 5 GCSE's including Maths and English.

We welcome qualifications from around the world. English language qualifications for international students: IELTS score of 6.0, TOFEL -550 (print-based), TOFEL- 80 (internet-based), Cambridge Proficiency or Advanced Grade C.

We also accept direct entry to Year Two and the final year to suitably qualified students.

We also consider applications from those who have gained relevant skills through a wide range of vocational qualifications or responsible experience.
