On this course you'll develop detailed knowledge and understanding of the most recent advances in 3D design, simulation and manufacturing. You'll be encouraged to explore how your design ideas can be developed, enhanced and manufactured. You'll then learn how design changes can be made quickly and cost effectively during the product development process.

Your first year lays a firm foundation in design theory, the use of computer aided design tools, manufacturing technology, engineering science and the application of materials in product development.

The second year develops these themes further through the use of established design theory combined with modern computing tools that enable you to develop creative and innovative solutions to real-world problems.

Your final year culminates in a major project which provides you with opportunities to develop expertise in a specific area of the programme.

Placement in industry

In the third year you'll have the opportunity of working on an industrial placement, where you can start to put your newly acquired skills into practice. This is a great opportunity to understand the way that the industry functions and to gain an appreciation of the priorities in the commercial environment. The (optional) sandwich year in industry will enhance your career prospects and confidence. Many students get their first job offers through this training year.
